President Donald Trump said the U.S. will implement reciprocal tariffs on its trading partners, with rates varying based off levies, taxes and trade barriers other nations place against the U.S. The reciprocal tariffs are designed to incentivize U.S. manufacturing while raising federal revenue, Trump said during a White House Rose Garden event April 2. “We will supercharge our domestic industrial base, we will pry open foreign markets and break down foreign trade barriers,” Trump said. “Ultimately, more production at home will mean stronger competition and lower prices for consumers.” Although Trump frequently mentioned the auto industry during his speech, saying Toyota ships 1 million vehicles to the U.S. but General Motors and Ford sell almost none in Japan, autos are not part of his reciprocal tariff plan. They won’t stack on top of the already announced 25 percent tariffs on vehicles imported into the U.S. market. That tariff starts April 3. The same tariff rate on major components such as engines and transmissions is expected to launch by May 3.
