One-fifth of all new-vehicle borrowers during the first quarter took out 84-month loans, a record, according to Edmunds. A year earlier, 16 percent of new-vehicle loans ran that long. Automakers investing billions of dollars developing more sophisticated driver-assistance systems may want to think twice. Consumer demand has stagnated for many of the underlying features in those systems, according to AutoPacific.

The market grew 4.4 percent to 3.9 million vehicles in the first quarter, driven by sales of hybrids and light trucks. Here's who won and lost in the Q1.

The automaker also is reacting to the Trump administration’s tariffs on imported vehicles by reducing incentives on inventory already at U.S. dealerships and exploring higher production at its U.S. assembly plant.

Volkswagen Group’s profit fell in the first quarter as the automaker grappled with one-off charges and early effects of U.S. tariffs that are poised to drive up costs for the industry.

The system will combine Nissan’s in-house driver-assistance technology with software from Wayve, a British tech startup that is developing end-to-end artificial intelligence models for automated driving.

Reckless and impaired driving has negated the technological progress made in vehicle safety. So NHTSA is pushing for more enforcement of traffic safety laws.
